Big East Gate and Some Other Places/

Happy Lunar New Year's Day!

A friend came to Tainan a little while back, and as a result, I went around and visited a lot of places I had been already.  The subject matter of the photos isn't new, but the perspective perhaps will be.

First up, we visited Big East Gate, one of the former city gates of Tainan, from back in the day when the whole city was surrounded with walls.

They have some neat reliefs nearby that are done to the theme of the 24 divisions of the year.  The Chinese solar calendar marks 24 important dates throughout the year that include: the solstices, the equinoxes, the dates exactly in between the solstices and equinoxes, and then I think the dates exactly in between those ones.  These dates are markers to show when (on average) the heat of summer begins, or when the wheat ripens, or when the snow starts, or whatever.

"Rain Water" the time when it begins to rain again after the winter.  I like the barfing dragon motif.

"Awakening of Insects" usually early March, when spring is starting to show the first signs of starting.

"Pure Light" in early April.  Maybe because the weather is finally nice(?) it's the day to attend to the family grave.

Nearby Big East Gate was this Japanese-style house (possibly actually from the Japanese colonial period) that I actually had somehow missed until now.

And next to it were some more Japanese-style structures, looking recently fixed-up.

I've posted about this place before.  It's a former gun-fort that is now on the grounds of a Zen Buddhist temple.

Qilin(?) statues.

And lastly, here's part of the Tainan wall that still remains.  I've posted this place before too, so I don't have anything new to say about it.  It's still very cool though!
