Quemoy Day 3: Secret Military Adventures/

Our third day at Quemoy was a bit sunnier than the previous two, so we decided to go to Mashan, the northernmost point of Quemoy.  Not only is it the northernmost point of the island, but it's also the closet point to any PRC controlled territory.  (The territory it's close to is not the mainland proper, but rather a small island, but still, we wanted to have a look.)
More Sorghum fields

This area on the way out appears to be another bay that was cut off from the sea.  (If you look at the picture below, the left side is the sea, and the right side is some really soggy land.)  It doesn't look like they plan to make a lake here like they did with Cihu on the west side of the island, but I'm not sure what they're doing with the land.

There was a fort converted to a tourist spot here as well.

From on top of the former fort, you can see the Mashan Cape nicely.  (It's the piece of land sticking out in the photo below.)

This is the mark one of the island's local military units.
I thought Super Man Wind Lion was adorable.
We had a really late start this day and got to Mashan after the lookout point was closed to tourists.  We walked out to the end of the cape in the photos above and below to look at this little island just offshore, Houyu.

When we got closer to the island, we noticed this little shed and some electric lines going out to Houyu.  The island is used as part of a military base.
I snapped a picture of the map I had so that you could see what the big deal about Mashan's location is. We're on the northern tip of Quemoy (the big island at the bottom of the map) just below that big black line that goes through the water.  (For reference, the line is merely a representation of a border.  I saw no evidence of an actual big, black line in the sea.)  If you look about Quemoy, above the black line, you can see there's a tiny island (called Jiaoyu).  That island is PRC (RED CHINA COMMIES) territory.  I think it's a just a base and no one lives on it, but still, it's less than 2 km away, which is pretty wild when you think about the fact that the PRC and the ROC were at war for a couple decades. In the photo below, the island on the horizon is Jiaoyu.

So that shed from before, it seems to have an engine in it.  It appears to no longer be in use, though I could be wrong, and even if I knew, I would have to kill you if I told you.  (Top secret military super secrets)
No, the above photo is not trash.  There were lots of these all over the rocks here, all very obviously old and worn down.  They're clumps of cement with broken glass bottles sticking up out of them.  They were left on the shoreline in order to slow down an invading army.  (The PRC apparently didn't issue its soldier shoes back in the day?)
Houyu
And below, a very clear photo of the PRC.  I don't think this photo even quite does the situation justice.  While they would have been no more than a tiny speck, I'm pretty sure I could have seen someone with my naked eye if they had walked out onto the beach on the island.  It's really close.
While we were standing around gawking at OMG COMMUNIST CHINA JUST OFF OUR FREEDOM-LOVING SHORES, a group of soldiers came down from Houyu and got into a boat.  At first we couldn't see clearly what they were doing, so I thought they were pedaling with their feet like in one of those swan boats that you can sometimes rent at touristy places.  However, as they got closer we realized it was a lot more hardcore.  There's a rope that goes from the mainland, so to speak, out to Houyu and which is tied at both ends.  The soldiers were puling on that rope to pull themselves across to the opposite shore.
You can see below the rope I'm talking about.
Right about halfway across, they stopped.  At first we thought they were just resting, but they just stayed there and stayed there.  Finally, from behind us a couple of other soldiers came along.  When they got to the shore we were standing on, the guys in the boat started pulling themselves slowly over again.  They picked up the two guys who had shown up and then started lugging themselves back over to the island.  The two new guys made no effort to help, so I can only assume they must have been higher ranked guys.  I don't know a lot about militaries, but I've heard stories of moving rocks from one creek to another by hand from guys who were drafted in Vietnam, so as far as I can tell, 90% of soldiering is "toughing it out" because some other guy with more stripes on his shoulder told you to.
On our way home, we saw this Superman-Wind Lion as well.  How cute!
