Duh-Hwa Temple /

I noticed Duh-Hwa Temple soon after arriving in Tainan.  It's located on Fucian Road, a major east-west road, and the building is pretty distinctive-looking.  Despite how soon I noticed it, I never actually visited it until recently.  This was a mistake on my part.  It's probably one of my favorite temples in Tainan.  I find it more beautiful than most temples because, compared to many others, it's very reserved in its coloration and decoration, and it's also very open and sunny.

I thought that this pillar looked somewhat Art Deco in style.

Just inside the outer wall there are a lot of plants.

It says "luck".

I always forget that my reflection will show up in these photos of windows that I take.  Every time.

This is a Buddhist temple, so I noticed that there were some elephants in the decorations.

This is the wall in the backmost courtyard.  I love how walls like this look when they've aged a bit.  The white paint gets stained black in a line pattern like this.  I'm not sure why, but I think that perhaps the tiles on the roof cause the rain to flow down more heavily in some places than others.

The middle is a stylized version of the character for "luck".  The surrounding design is an I-Ching hexagram.  This octogon version is one of the more commonly seen ones.  It's, for instance, also on South Korea's flag.

"Buddha's light is always shining" or something like that.

A fantastical animal with a yin yang mark.

This is the space below the willow in one of the photos above.  It was shady and wonderfully relaxing.

While I was standing here I saw a woman walk by.  As she passed in front of the front gate, she stopped, faced towards the temple, bowed, and then started walking again.  I've seen people do this at other temples in Taiwan.  It seems like this is a practice that still is going strong, at least in Tainan.

Right behind the temple was this open space.  Tainan has a surprisingly large number of unused spaces, even in the middle of the city.  There's a lot of potential for anyone who wants to give up the Taipei rat race...

By the time I had walked around the neighborhood a bit, it was dark.  Here's the front door when it's closed.
